Thailand To Myanmar Land Crossing

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is one of the least known countries in Asia. If you are planning to travel in Asia, Myanmar is the most authentic place to visit. It is rich in history, culture and tradition.

At present it is only possible to travel freely over land between Myanmar and Thailand.  BangladeshLaos and China crossings are currently not permitted for foreigners.

Myanmar’s simple e-visa system is valid for travel through the Thai-Myanmar border points of Mae Sai/Tachileik, Mae Sot/Myawaddy and Ranong/Kawthaung

Mae Sot/Myawaddy

The Mae Sot (Thailand, Tak Province) / Myawaddy (Myanmar, Kayin State) crossing point is the most practical place to cross for onward travel into Myanmar, because of its relative proximity to the main Myanmar transport network and places of interest such as Mount Kyaiktiyo (the Golden Rock), Hpa An and Mawlamyine.

  1. There are some areas in Myanmar which are not open to tourists yet. So be careful while picking the entry point. Mae Sot is so far, the easiest entry point and through here, you can easily travel within the unrestricted areas by road.
  2. Accommodation is pretty costly in Myanmar. Expect prices between $7 to $20 per night for dorms or single/double rooms, depending upon the area you are in. It’s recommended to make prior bookings through any of the hostel booking websites like Agoda, Booking or Hostel World
  3. Homestay and camping are strictly illegal in the country. While camping, try to be discreet and quiet during the night.
  4. The wifi is poor and buying a sim card is a good idea.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

– Hpa-An area for me is one of the most lovely in all of Burma. So stay there for at least two nights. You can have a beautiful day out on bike or rent a driver with a motor rickshaw.

– I booked a private room (Soe Brothers 2 guesthouse) in Hpa-An 20,000 Kyats ($15)

Don´t miss;
